Civic engagement and social responsibility are key components of a Cornell education. The fun and learning begin for first year students at the annual service day during New Student Orientation.

Civic Engagement

A bright future for our society depends upon the leadership of passionate, engaged individuals who advocate for the community and who care about social justice. Cornell students have earned a reputation for excelling in these areas.

The college is taking these efforts even deeper with the new Project on Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility. The program combines academic and co-curricular components to motivate students for a lifetime of responsible public citizenship.

Among the Project’s components:

  • Courses addressing ethical concepts and debates about justice and equality, as well as courses that provide opportunities for direct service and social activism.

  • Leadership and service opportunities ranging from Relay for Life to Alternative Spring Break (in both national and international locales).

  • A lecture series featuring Peace Corps representatives, directors of service agencies, and more.

  • Internships and fellowships in Congressional offices, neighborhood development projects, and other programs that last for a term or longer
