Warning, Probation, Strict Probation, and return to good academic standing

Finding yourself on Academic Warning, Probation, or Strict Probation can be disappointing and a little scary, but it is not the end of your Cornell journey. Many successful students have faced academic challenges along the way and returned to good academic standing.

These academic statuses are designed to help you recognize when changes are needed and connect you with the support and resources available to help you succeed.

What happens next?

  • Understand why you are on Academic Warning, Probation, or Strict Probation.
  • Identify challenges that may be affecting your academic performance.
  • Develop a personalized plan for success.
  • Connect you with campus resources and support services.
  • Monitor your progress throughout the semester.

Once you are placed on  Academic Warning, Probation, or Strict Probation, your first step is to meet with us in the Academic Advising Office. During this initial meeting, we will work together to develop an academic success plan, discuss strategies for improvement, and establish a schedule for regular weekly check-ins throughout the semester. We will also answer any questions you have and help you understand what to expect moving forward.

Credit requirement

1st year - 7 credits
2nd year - 15 credits
3rd year - 23 credits
4th year - 31 credits

Getting back on track starts with several intentional steps.  By attending class, completing coursework, utilizing campus resources, and following your academic success plan, you can improve your academic standing and continue making progress toward graduation.
