Each year the Theatre Department stages three to four main productions. We tackle a broad range of performances spanning standards like Shakespeare and Sondheim, to edgy and contemporary works such as Big Love and Marat/Sade. We often stage new works with guest playwrights working with the actors and director throughout the rehearsal process (Birthwitches). We also devise our own productions; a collaborative approach wherein the ensemble creates the script from scratch (Here and Now). We frequently stage an operetta or musical like our recent productions of Avenue Q and Company. See a calendar for our current season or a list of our recent productions
Guest Artist Program
Our Guest Artist Program brings professionals from all areas of theatre into our classrooms and production processes. The program began with our long-standing relationship with Riverside Theatre, Iowa City’s resident performing company, and its artistic directors Ron Clark and Jody Hovland. Some of our guests include artists from the four-time Emmy Award Winning Puppet Kitchen, a New York City based theatre company.
Typically, the department sponsors at least three student-directed productions (usually undertaken by their directors for academic credit) and an occasional special project, such as a staged reading. In addition, the Student Theatre Council (STC) takes on three or four additional projects per year.
