Guidelines for Creative Writing Submissions
to Open Field and Department Awards Competition
The Department of English encourages submission of creative writing (poems, fiction, creative nonfiction) and art work (photography, paintings, sketches) to Open Field and to the Departmental awards competition.
To submit, please follow these directions closely:
- Submit your work to Glenn Freeman, copied to Cheryl Dake, attached in an e-mail. Work must be submitted as a Word document; if you have trouble submitting in Word format, please contact Glenn before the deadline.
- Put all submitted works in a single document, starting each piece on the first line of a new page. Format your work on the page as you would like to see it formatted on the journal. Work will be judged anonymously by the editors and the awards judge, so please do not put your name anywhere in the document. Total pages for your submission should not exceed 15 pages.
- Create a cover sheet that includes your name, campus address, phone, and the title of each work included. If any work is untitled, include the first line of the work. Also include a biography that you would like to include in the journal. Biographies can be as serious or humorous as you would like. Feel free to look at previous issues to see the range of biographies writers submit. See sample.
- All submitted work should be in 12-point font. Prose works should be double-spaced. Poetry can be single-spaced but be sure to start each work on the first line of a new page (poems may be longer than a page but there should not be two poems on the same page).
- For art submissions, please email digital black & white files in .PNG form to GFreeman@cornellcollege.edu. If available, include a color version of your art for consideration for the cover. All submissions require a title and applicants must include a short bio for the magazine. There is no limit on the number of art submissions. If you need help documenting your art work, contact EMariano12.
- The submission deadline for the for the 2011-12 Open Field is 5 PM, Friday, February 17.
- This year's editorial staff: Editor Elizabeth Brown, assistant editor Jessika Castillo-Rivera, and art editors Ellen Mariano and Namita Shah.
- Please contact Glenn Freeman or the editorial staff with any questions about the journal or these guidelines.
