2009-2010 Public Events
During the 2009-2010 academic year, the Berry Center will host several speakers on campus.
Cornell, along with the University of Iowa, Drake and Grinnell again hosted speakers from the National Security Network. The National Security Network has a goal of strengthening citizen support for responsible US foreign policy throughout the country. Speakers included Jake Colvin, Director USA* Engage, and Major General Paul D. Eaton, U.S. Army (Ret.), Senior Advisor, and Dr. Bernard Finel, Senior Fellow with the American Security Project.
During November, the Berry Center hosted two panel discussions. The first, entitled "Mechanics and Challenges of Implementing No Child Left Behind in Iowa" featured Tom Deeter, Ph.D - Educational Program Consultant, Iowa Department of Education and John Scott, MA - Title III Consultant, Iowa Department of Education. The second was "Understanding Health care Reform: Cost, Access, and Quality" co-sponsored with Dimensions: The Center for the Science and Culture of Healthcare. This discussion featured Jason Hockenberry, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in Health Management and Policy, University of Iowa; Peter Cram, M.D., M.B.A., Hospitalist and Physician Researcher, University of Iowa; Ted Townsend, President and CEO, St. Luke’s Hospital; and was moderated by professor Chris Conrad from Cornell's Economics and Business Department.
In December, the Berry Center and Dimensions presented a BRCA 1 and 2 Symposium featuring keynote speaker Chris Hansen, lead attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Hansen represents the ACLU in the lawsuit against Myriad Genetics. He discussed the case on Friday, December 11 at 11:30 in Hedges Conference Room, The Commons.
