About Residence Life
As a liberal arts college committed to the concept
of a residential community, Cornell College endeavors to develop a climate
in its residence halls where students grow and mature to the full extent
of their abilities. Living and interacting with students from diverse
backgrounds and cultures provides residents with a challenging opportunity
to learn about new lifestyles and philosophies. Residence halls are more
than a place to sleepthey provide opportunities for personal growth.
The residence life program capitalizes on the many
diverse influences in residence halls and channels these influences toward
positive learning experiences. Programs and activities are planned and
structured for students to develop deeper self-awareness and self-sufficiency
and to improve their acceptance, cooperation and understanding of others.
Residence hall living can help students to:
- develop leadership skills through participation
in hall government and activities;
- learn responsibilities which accompany freedom
of action, group living, and membership in the College community;
- develop self-awareness and self-discipline;
- broaden academic interests;
- improve study skills and habits;
- clarify and evaluate reasons for being in college;
- learn to respect, accept and be sensitive to
others, especially those of different races, religions, cultures and
sexual orientation;
- enjoy and value relationships and friendships
with those unlike themselves;
- learn respect for the rights and property of
others; and
- improve communication and cooperation with others.
