In French 205, you will develop and refine the following skills in French: understanding and use of French grammar, expansion of practical vocabulary, speaking and listening proficiency, reading authentic cultural documents and writing.
As in all of our French classes at Cornell, French 205 has a significant focus on culture. Each chapter of Sur le vif is grounded in a cultural aspect of France or the Francophone world.
Required materials:
Sur le vif textbook (4th Edition)
Sur le vif student manual (4th Edition)
Recommended materials:
French-English dictionary
Système-D software. This software is more than just a word processor; it's a dictionary and grammar reference too. It takes the drudge work out of writing in French. And it's fabulous for re-writes!
English Grammar for Students of French
| Required regular activities: |
|
-
Daily Quizzes: Every class day will begin promptly with a 5-10 minute quiz based on the material covered the day before. The time limit for this quiz will be strictly enforced. Students who arrive late to class will not be given extra time.
-
Oral/aural: Speaking in French in class, working with lab exercises (CAN-8). Class is held exclusively in French, and students are expected to speak in French with their classmates at all times.
-
Reading/writing: Exercises done in class, homework and compositions.
- Grammar: Make a notebook of all the verb conjugations that you learn in class. Review all grammar explanations for material covered in the Structures pages for each chapter. Consult the appendices for proper use of prepositions, present participles and verb conjugations.
- Vocabulary: During class time, concentrate on absorbing the new vocabulary words as they are presented in French, visualizing what they represent rather than associating them with an English equivalent. Review the vocabulary after class.
- Time commitment to French: Students should expect to put in at least a 40 hour week.
Parlez Français!: You will find that this class has a very strong oral orientation. I will present new vocabulary and grammar in French, and group and pair work will also be done in French. Use your time in class to practice your oral skills. Develop paraphrasing strategies in French, recycle and review the vocabulary that you have learned every day, and don't get too hung up on what you don't yet know. Focus on what you do know, and commit to knowing it well. Be relaxed too. It's common to make plenty of mistakes while perfecting your French. Make it your goal to speak lots of French, understanding that errors are a vital part of learning a new skill.
Late Work: Not accepted without a valid excuse. All rédactions, rewrites, and other written homework are due in the "Devoirs" folder by the end of afternoon class. Make a point of understanding what you need to do each afternoon before leaving class. Don't hesitate to ask me for clarification. Students who know that they will be absent must make arrangements for making up assignments and exams in advance of their absence.
Attendance and Participation : Learning a language requires consistent practice and communication with others. The contact hours that you have in class with French are essential to your goal of learning the language.
Students must attend both morning and afternoon sessions. Your participation grade will drop a full letter grade for every unexcused absence from class beyond one day. The participation grade will be based on the following criteria: attendance, ability to stay on-task in the target language during group and pair work, preparation for classwork, respect for fellow classmates, and apparent progress in skills. For excused absences, students are expected to study the lesson content on their own and find out if important announcements were made in class. Assignments due on that day should be turned in on the following class day. Contact me in advance if you know you must be absent. Do not relay messages via other students in the class.
Students participating in official Cornell events must see me in advance to tell me that they will be absent and are required to have the appropriate office send me, as soon as possible, a memo with specifics about times and dates. If for unforeseen reasons you cannot come to class, please call my office before class starts.
Drops: The College drop policy will be strictly enforced. In order to drop on the 15th day of classes, you must have attended all classes, turned in all work, and have made a good effort to succeed in the course.
Accomodations for all Students: Cornell College is committed to providing equal educational opportunities to all students. If you have a documented learning disability and will need any accommodation in this course, you must request the accommodation(s) from me as early as possible and no later than the third day of the term.
Additional information about the policies and procedures for accommodation of learning disabilities is available on the Cornell web site
Academic dishonesty: This will not be tolerated. Please re-read the Compass if you have not done so this year. If I determine, after careful consideration, that academic dishonesty has occurred, the work in question will be assigned a grade of 0. There are always further penalties possible, including the assignment of a grade of F in the course. The specific circumstances will be communicated to the Registrar's Office.
Of particular concern to French 205 is electronic translation (including both web-based and software). It is permissible to put an Engish word or short phrase into an electronic dictionary. It is not permissible to put a full English sentence in and offer the French result as your own work for credit. Similarly, students are not allowed to submit French writing that is the work of anyone else. If students seek out the help of tutors, they must communicate to their professor how the tutor has helped them for a specific assignment.
**When in doubt, please discuss your assignment with me BEFORE submitting the work for credit.
Cell-phones must be shut off and stored away from view during class time. No texting during class-time. No laptops.
Grades will be based on the following distribution:
- Class participation 10%
- Exams 45%
- Exposé Culturel 10%
- Rédactions 15%
- In Class work, daily quizzes, homework 20%
