Major & Minor Requirements

Major Requirements

A minimum of nine course credits in English beyond ENG 111 (or any course satisfying the Writing Requirement.  Courses must include:

  • American Survey (210)
  • English Survey I (211)
  • English Survey II (212)
  • One course in Medieval and Renaissance Literature (321-327)
  • One course in English Literature, 18th Century to Modern (328-336)
  • One course in American Literature (343-351)
  • One course in poetry or broader topics (361-372)
  • One elective course, which may include creative writing.
  • Senior Seminar (411)

Recommended Course Sequence

The vast majority of our courses have only ENG 111 as a prerequisite.  Students should note, though, that many courses are offered in alternate years or every third year and plan accordingly.

 Notes:

  • We recommend that students complete surveys by the end of the second year.
  • We do not recommend that surveys be taken one after the other. Consider, instead, following American Survey (210) with a course in American Literature (343-351), and so forth.
  • Students are welcome to complete more than the minimum number of English courses required for the major.

Minor Requirements

A minimum of six course credits in English beyond ENG 111 (or any course satisfying the Writing Requirement), which include:

  • Two courses from ENG 210, 211, 212
  • Four courses from at least two of the following groups:
    • ENG 321-327
    • ENG 328-336
    • ENG 343-351
    • ENG 361-372
