Dave Gatton '75

On May 13, Cornell College welcomed alumnus Dave Gatton '75 back to campus as a Berry Center Distinguished Visitor. Gatton is the director of the Council for the New American City within the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He has overseen the publication of 28 U.S. Metro Economy Reports, including the U.S. Metros Economies: Current and Potential Green Jobs in the U.S. Economy, October, 2009. The report developed a "Green Jobs Index" using a baseline calculation of current green jobs in the economy, and provided forecasts of green jobs in various renewable technology sectors, including solar, wind and geothermal. During his 25 year career in urban affairs he has advised cities on economic development strategies, and environmental concerns. Gatton has also founded the Urban Water Council, the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities, the Recycling at Work Campaign, and the Municipal Waste Management Association.

While on campus he spoke in Professor Craig Allin's POL 367 Urban Politics course, dined with students at a Lunch and Learn, and made a public presentation, entitled "Earth in the Balance: America's Cities in a Green, Global Economy."
