Michael Boock '82

At the time of CAPT Michael J. Boock, JAGG, USN visit to Cornell, he was serving as Commanding Officer at the Naval Legal Service Office, Northwest. 

CAPT Boock received his BA, cum laude, from Cornell College in 1982 and his JD, with distinction, from the University of Iowa in 1985.  He was commissioned into the Navy and assigned to Naval Legal Service Office, Corpus Christi, where he served as Senior Defense Counsel.  After serving in Guam, Key West, FL, Newport, RI, and Alameda, CA, CAPT Boock attended the University of Washington, where he received a LLM in Law and Marine Affairs. 

Following an assignment as Deputy Assistant Judge Advocate General of the Navy for International and Operational Law, CAPT Boock served from April 2000 to April 2003 as Deputy Legal Counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  He then attended the College of Naval Warfare at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he graduated in June 2004 with highest distinction and received a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies. 

CAPT Boock was assigned as the Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, Naval Service Training Command and Commander, Naval Region Midwest in Great Lakes, IL, from July 2004 to June 2005.  CAPT Boock served as the Senior Military Assistant and Special Counsel to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense immediately prior to taking command on July 28, 2006.

CAPT Boock has subspecialty codes in International Law, Environmental Law and National Security Studies.  He has been a member of the Adjunct Faculty of George Washington University Law School from 1997 until 2003 and has lectured at Georgetown University Law School, the Naval Academy, the National Defense University, and the Naval War College on subjects related to international law and environmental law.

During Capt Boock's two-day visit in December, 2007, he spoke in three different classes (Environmental Politics, International Politics, and Current Cases before the Supreme Court), delivered a lecture entitled, "Old Law/New Wars: International Law for the International Fight Against Terrorism," held roundtable discussions with both Economics and Business Students and Politics student, and dined with several student groups, faculty, and students attending the courses in which he spoke.
