Break Away is a national nonprofit organization that promotes the development of quality alternative break programs through training, assisting, and connecting campuses and communities. At Cornell, we subscribe to the foundation Break Away has provided for quality alternative break trips. We believe that a service trip should be more than completing service in a community. Service trips should be immersive, educational, and life changing opportunities for our students.

The Active Citizen Continuum is the lifeblood and driving force of Break Away and Cornell's approach to service trips. It is our goal to help students become more community-oriented in their lives and take time to reflect on their role in society. To help guide individuals along the continuum, Break Away devised Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break. At Cornell, we infuse these eight components into our trips to facilitate effective week-long service programs.

  1. Strong Direct Service
  2. Full Engagement
  3. Diversity and Social Justice
  4. Orientation
  5. Education
  6. Training
  7. Reflection
  8. Reorientation
