Students with Disabilities
Cornell College is committed to being an engaging and supportive place of learning and discovery for all students. Advising a student with learning needs that require additional support and accommodation may be challenging. It is important to make no assumptions regarding your advisee’s ability to be successful at Cornell College. A focus on the student’s strengths will be important.

The college offers services to help students succeed in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Faculty and staff work closely with students to ensure access to the College’s programs, activities, and service.
The Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising (CASA) maintains disability-related documents, certifies eligibility for services, and, in close coordination with the Office of Student Affairs, determines reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Documentation should be specific and consist of current testing results and recommendations.

If necessary, assist your advisee in filing the appropriate documentation and/or request for accommodations with the Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising.
Remind your advisee that it is her/his responsibility to contact the course instructor within the first three days of each course regarding the accommodations needed for the duration of the course.
Be particularly thoughtful in course selection, building on the student’s declared interests. Early success in college work is validating and important to students. However, all students must enroll in required courses at the College and, by law, cannot be advised to take courses ONLY in their areas of strength or interest.
