Bowman-Carter Hall (1885)

Bowman-Carter Hall is yet another testament to Cornell's longstanding support of feminism. It was opened in 1885 as a women's residence hall in a time when it was unusual for a college or university to build a nice dorm for its female students. In World War II the Navy took over Bowman Hall, along with several other campus buildings, and housed men there. George Bowman, Cornell's founder, raised part of the cost of this building. Extensive renovations were finished in 1990, courtesy of a generous gift from Archie Carter, Class of 1933, and his wife, Marie.
