The Rock (1889)

The granite boulder weighs about 2 ½ tons and was brought by sled from nearby Palisades-Kepler State Park by the class of 1889. Over the years, various student groups have hauled it away at night and buried it secretly in some part of the campus and occasionally off-campus. Several months or even years later, another group would discover its location, dig it up, and move it to a new spot. The Rock has been above ground since 1977. Now students prefer to paint the Rock. If you stop to read it you'll see everything from Greek letters to shibboleths in Welsh.
