Objetivo del curso: Spanish 101-102-103 is a three-term sequence that presents the essential structure of the Spanish language and basic vocabulary in a four-skill approach: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The same texts are used in all three courses; approximately one-third of the material will be covered this term. Your goal is correct self expression in Spanish as well as understanding of both written and spoken Spanish and a nascent understanding of the Hispanic culture. You should plan to spend approximately three hours daily on your homework assignments which should include 1) reading over the chapter--paying particular attention to the grammatical explanations and exercises, 2) writing the exercises in the workbook/laboratory manual, 3) going over the CAN-8 exercises that corresponds to the material we have covered in class that day and/or listening to the audio program on the ¿Qué Tal? on-line learning center. The combination Workbook-Laboratory Manual has the answers in the back, so we will not go over the daily assignments in class unless you have specific questions regarding an exercise. There will be daily quizzes plus two written exams and one oral final exam. There will be no make-up quizzes unless you have an official medical excuse; however, the lowest quiz grade will be dropped. There will be three short compositions written on themes that reinforce the grammar points being studied in class. They should be typewritten or handwritten in blue or black ink and written on every other line. Students are responsible for correcting these compositions after they have been reviewed by the professor. Everyone is expected to present one of the compositions orally for the rest of the class and to give a short oral presentation related to the culture of one of the countries treated in the "Enfoque Cultural" section of each chapter. (The audio program and other on-line material can be found at the Online Learning Center: http://www.mhhe.com/quetal7. You have access to CAN-8 in the Humanities Laboratory in College Hall. Type in your Student ID number where it asks for user name and "pword" where it asks for your password. Once you have access to the main menu, change your password.)
