Department NewsPeterson and Carlson to Retire Richard Peterson and Chris Carlson will retire at the end of the 2006-2007 academic years. Peterson has be a memeber of the Cornell faculty since 1972 and Carlson since 1980. A search for a new department member has begun.
ADJUNCT FACULTY The department is fortunate to have Dr. John Doershuk and Dr. Judith Ann Seibert continure as adjunct members in the department. John Doershuk will teach ANT 105. Human Origins in Term 5 and Archaeological Filed Methods in Term 9. John has served as the Program Director of the Office of the State Archaeologist/The University of Iowa since 1995. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the University's American Indian and Native Studies Program. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Archaeology from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Carleton College. John has lectured at Cornell since 1998. He also teaches ANT 105. Human Origings and ANT 202. Indigenous People's and Cultures of North America. Judith Siebert will teach ANT 205. The Maya in Term 1, ANT 101. Cultual Anthropology in Terms 4 and 5. Judith is writing her Ph.D. dissertation in Anthropology at the University of Iowa. Her thesis is entitled "Ideology and Expressions of Language Change in the German-Chilean Community". Judith has a B.A. in Spanish & Geography with secondary education certification from Augustana College; an additional 50 credit hours in diverse topics including: "Cajun French Louisiana", "Macro-economics", "Native North America", "German for Travelers", and "Expository Writing" from the American Institute of Commerce, Black Hawk College, Augustana College, and the University of Iowa; and an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Iowa. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY The One-Course-At-A-Time calendar offers many opportunities for students interested in careers related to sociology and anthropology to pursue internships. Because Cornell students can devote all their time for a term or more to their internships, they are highly valued by in all types of organizations. In addition the One-Course-At-A-Time calendar allows students to arrange internships in other parts of the United States and even in other countries. Many majors in sociology and anthropology build one or more internships into their academic programs.
