Job Title: Case manager at Travler's Aid Society homeless shelter

Job description: I work with other case managers and shelter staff to support shelter residents in becoming self sufficient. This means focusing on mental health, substance abuse, anger management and life skills. We try to give residents the tools to break the cycle of homelessness.

Most satisfying and rewarding aspects of your position: The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I see someone who has come to the shelter repeatedly and I can help them get hooked up with support systems in the community before they get housing. It is also rewarding to help someone get into substance abuse treatment, anger management, domestic violence treatment, or whatever is helpful to them. If this can change their outlook on life even a little bit and give them the hope that their life can be different.

What jobs or other positions have you held that prepared you for this position? I had an internship at MAHP working with Eco Youth, I volunteered at domestic violence shelter, and I worked at mental health counselor.

What are your occupational and/or educational goals? I would like to go to grad school and focus on mental health for youth in the correctional system. Or focus on the legal field in the social work area.
