Name: Sarah N. Gatson Year you graduated from Cornell: 1991 Other majors or minors: Spanish Post Cornell Education: Northwestern University, MA 1992, Ph.D. 1999 Job Title: Asst. Professor Job description: I am a professor at Texas A&M University, a research university. As an assistant professor, I teach four classes a year on the semester system, and engage in original research and publication in academic journals and (soon) books. Most satisfying and rewarding aspects of your position: The fact that I am largely independent and can create my own schedule and projects. Working with graduate and undergraduate students who are excited about learning. What jobs or other positions have you held that prepared you for this position? As an undergraduate at Cornell, I spent a significant part of my work-study career as an assistant to a professor. I also held an ACM Minority Summer Scholars fellowship that enabled me to get a great deal of insight into research careers, and to do my own major research project. And graduate school is one long preparation for the research and teaching professor position. Cornell College generally, however, is excellent training for both grad school and any job where you have to be very self-directed, and know how to manage your own time and goals. What are your occupational and/or educational goals? As an educator, I want to make sure that students get a lot out of their learning experiences. As a scholar and writer, I want to do interesting and useful work that challenges people to think about and understand their world and others in it in new ways. Additional comments: Sociology rules!
