Major & Minor Requirements

Note: This page is designed to assist students, faculty, and advisors by providing degree requirements and recommendations in an easy-to-use format. The course catalogue remains the official source of degree requirements -- please report any discrepancies with this page to the department chair.  


Major Requirements for Russian

A minimum of seven course credits in Russian at or above the 300 level, which include:

  • Composition and Conversation (RUS 301) OR
    Language in Context (RUS 303)
  • At least two courses in Russian literature

Notes:

  • A maximum of two courses in Russian history may be applied toward the major:
    • Muscovite and Imperial Russia (HIS 321)
    • Revolutionary and Soviet Russia (HIS 322)
    • Russia from 1941 (HIS 323)
  • A major in Russian Studies is also offered; however, students may not combine a major in Russian with the interdisciplinary major in Russian Studies.

Notes:

  • RUS 301 and 303 are taught in alternate years opposite one another; the same is true for 311 and 312.  
  • Literature in translation courses 341, 351, and 355 are offered every third year.
  • We recommend that students consider a semester in Russia during their junior or senior year.

Teaching Major Requirements

A minimum of eight course credits, to include the requirements for the Russian major listed above and LAL 308 (Language Teaching Methodology). In addition to the foregoing requirements, prospective teachers must also apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program (preferably at the start of their sophomore year) and complete coursework leading to secondary certification. Prospective teachers should request a current list of the specific course requirements from the Education Office.

Minor Requirements

A minimum of five course credits in Russian which include

  • RUS 205, 301 or 303
  • Three other Russian courses at or above the 300 level, at least one of which must be a literature course conducted in Russian.

Note: One course in Russian history (HIS 321,322, or 323) may be substituted to count towards the minor
