Leadership Opportunities

Cornell residence halls are great places to have fun, relax, study, and make friends. They're also a terrific place for building leadership skills.

Living & Learning Communities
At the upperclass level, Living and Learning Communities are self-selected groups of students who live together while building leadership skills and serving others around a theme of their choice. Recent groups have focused on poverty, environmental issues, cancer awareness, women's issues,  and more. For first-year students, Connect Floor and Wellness Floor offer similar opportunities with a great deal of support and guidance from our staff.

IDEA Institute
The IDEA Institute is a voluntary two-tiered leadership program that aims to provide participants with multiple opportunities to explore for themselves issues related to leadership, to develop their own vision of themselves as leaders, and to begin to practice leadership within the Cornell College campus and community.

Hall Councils
Each hall is governed by hall council comprised of students and a residence life advisor.  The councils develop policies, handle student issues, coordinate activities, and interact with other halls through the hall council association. Hall councils allow students to shape their own residence hall experience while growing as leaders.

National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)
NRHH is a national honorary society that seeks to celebrate accomplishments of residential students, as well as providing support for Hall Councils and student organziations on campus. NRHH membership is limited to only the top 1% of students on campus. The application process to become a member of NRHH typically happens during the 2nd semester of each year.

Peer Leadership Roles
Our resident assistants, peer advocates, and hall council advisors provide critical role-modeling and student assistance. These paid staff positions require serious committment, but offer tremendous rewards for those ready to further develop as leaders.
