Bidding Instructions
A Guide for New Students
- You have a maximum of 60 points to allot in any amounts you wish to your six courses. Bids must be in whole numbers — no fractions or decimals — and must not exceed the 60 point limit.
- Registration is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis. Your chances of getting into a course will depend upon how many points you bid and not when you register — provided your registration is completed by noon, Friday, November 4 (including advisor approval of courses).
- Listed below is a table with the lowest successful bid for introductory courses during last October's registration. This is intended to be used as a point of reference only — increasing the amount of your bid does not ensure admission, nor does a lower bid necessarily preclude you from gaining entry in the course. For information regarding the number of spaces currently available in a course, we encourage you to access the current Course Schedule on Cornell's web site.
- You should bid according to how important the course or section is to you. The higher the bid, the better your chance of getting the course. Because many people bid in multiples of 5, a bid, for example, of 6 or 13 will often prove more successful than 5 or 10.
- Bid ZERO points for courses that are not likely to close. Your advisor can assist you in determining these.
- If you are registering for sequential courses (e.g., CHE 121 and 122, FRE 103 and 205), you must bid for both courses. This procedure is different from that used in the spring; so your upperclass friends and even your faculty advisor may be confused. In the fall, you must bid separately for every course.
- LOWEST SUCCESSFUL BIDS FROM LAST YEAR: Listed below are all courses that were unable to admit all who registered in October 2010. To understand what is meant by "lowest successful bid," consider this example: A certain course has a cap of 25 students. The student who obtained the 25th place bid 14 points; therefore 14 is the lowest successful bid. Obviously, if a course did not close (in which case the course will not be found below), even bids of zero were successful. You can use last year's figures to estimate the number of points you will need to bid to gain admission to a desired course. Let us say that the lowest successful bid for COURSE XXX was 17. If you very much want this course, you should bid at least 17 points and probably more. This table should also enable you to make the best use of your points. For example, if you judge from these figures that it will take at least 17 points to gain admission to COURSE XXX, then it would be foolish and wasteful of precious points to bid only 10 points when those 10 points could better be spent increasing the bid on another course that is of importance to you.
- Parallel Courses: ART 7/8-103/202. These parallel courses span blocks 7 and 8 and may not be taken separately. Register for both ART 78 103 A and ART 78 202 A. Questions related to parallel courses should be directed to your advisor.
