Registering New Students for Blocks 4 - 9
Monday, October 24 - Friday, November 4, 2011
On-line registration begins Monday, October 24 (the third week of Block Two), and ends at noon on Friday, November 4 (the end of the first week of Block Three).
Registration entails these few steps:
- Student meets with advisor;
- Student enters one class per block along with bidding points into Self Service;
- Advisor approves the schedule through Self Service before noon on November 4;
- Course confirmation information finalized by Tuesday, November 15;
- Accommodation Evening is Thursday, November 17 for students with one or more “No Course” registrations.
Since the bidding system (not the order that a registration is submitted) determines whether a student secures enrollment in a course, you and your advisees can schedule meetings when they best fit into your schedules any time throughout the registration period. However, schedules must be submitted by the student and approved by the advisor by noon on November 4th to be included in the bidding process. If an advisee has not contacted you by October 27, you should contact the student and schedule a time to meet with him or her.
- Note: There is no sequential bidding in this registration period. You must bid separately for every course.
Each student will receive an Enrollment Worksheet for On-Line Registration in campus mail on or about October 18. They have been instructed to bring this sheet to their registration conference along with their unofficial transcript and current schedule. This worksheet is intended to inform your discussion with the student and will only be returned to the Registrar's Office if a course cannot be registered through Self Service. Examples:
- A waived prerequisite.
- Registering for a course that requires a writing course as a prerequisite. The student is registered for ART 151 or EDU 240 in block 2 but has not yet completed the course. See note on the Enrollment Worksheet.
Bidding Information is available by clicking here.
On-Line Registration instructions are available by clicking here.
New students may have some questions about the bidding system or registration in general. Please do not hesitate to refer them to our office, or to call us if we can assist you in answering those questions. To help you and your advisees during the registration session, seats available in each course are listed on the Course Schedule.
BEFORE REGISTRATION
If you have a transfer student with senior or advanced junior standing who needs certain courses in order to be graduated this year or early next year, please have the student confer with Jonna Higgins-Freese before registering. We can do a preliminary graduation analysis to be certain that all requirements will be met with the proposed schedule of courses.AFTER REGISTRATION
Student schedules will be visible through Self Service but are subject to change and will not be final until Tuesday, November 15. We will provide you with a list of your advisees who need to attend Accommodation Evening, and a list of those who obtained all their classes and will not be allowed to attend.
To enable students to add a replacement course, Accommodation Evening will be held Thursday, November 17; attendance for students with NO COURSE designations will be mandatory.
ADVISING FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS
- First-year and transfer students who have not yet satisfied the B.A. Writing Requirement should take either ENG 111 or another writing course this year (unless exempted by virtue of transfer credit). ART 7-151, CLA 9-111, ECB 5-102, EDU 6-240, ENG 111 (offered in blocks 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9), FRE 6-265, MUS 4-270, PHY 7-125, POL 4-255, and POL 6-262 are designated as writing courses this year. A student may not take ENG 111 more than once even though the topics are different; no student may bid for a writing-designated course if they have completed one.
- Parallel Courses: Students who registered for ART 3/4-103/202 have been allotted 10 points for the block 4 portion of the course. ART 7/8-103/202 are also offered on the parallel format and must be taken in both blocks 7 and 8.
- Most course prerequisites are listed on the Course Schedule, but all of them are listed in the Catalogue. Prerequisites such as “junior standing” and “declared major” are only listed in the Catalogue. Click on the course link to see prerequisites as well as general education requirements that may be fulfilled (wholly or in part) by each course and refer to the Catalogue to see if there are more requirements. If in doubt about prerequisites, consult the instructor.
- Students must have earned at least nine course credits in order to register for Individual Projects, Group Projects, Internships, or one-term courses numbered in the 900s. Please note that there are limitations to the number of credits of Independent Study courses that may be applied to the B.A. and B.Mus. degrees. Consult the Catalogue section on "Additional Academic Programs" for more information.
- First-year students may not have more than one vacation blocks.
- New students who intend to continue in foreign language and/or mathematics are encouraged to take these early in their career while their retention of what was learned in high school is still high.
- First-year students who have been granted advanced placement or who have completed at Cornell an introductory course in a particular department may take any upper-level course in that department if they meet the prerequisites. Generally, it isn't recommended that first-year students take upper-level courses in which they will have to compete with departmental majors or in which the professor will expect greater maturity. Your role as advisor will play an important part in helping the student make these decisions.
- Most course prerequisites (as printed in the Catalogue, Catalogue Supplement, and on the Course Schedule) are a part of the registration database and will be checked when students submit their schedules to you to be approved. If there are prerequisite exceptions granted by the instructor, students must list the course on their worksheet, obtain the signature of the instructor and advisor, and bring the worksheet to the Registrar’s Office for manual processing. All other courses must be approved by the advisor in Self Service before bringing the worksheet to the Registrar’s Office.
- The database cannot check for class levels, declared majors, and SAT scores as part of the prerequisite checking mechanism. Check the 2011-12 Catalogue to be sure all prerequisites are met.
