Tentative list of essay and short answer questions for Exam #3

Some of these questions will be chosen by the professor for the exam.

  1. What characterizes a good personality test?
  2. How does stress affect the immune system?
  3. Explain TWO major criticisms of Freud's theories and methods.
  4. Why are some of Freud's ideas so difficult to test? Give an example of one of his ideas that would be difficult to test and explain why.
  5. Describe ONE of Freud's ideas that has been supported or partly supported by scientific research. Explain.
  6. Describe ONE of Freud's ideas that has been rejected by scientific research. Explain.
  7. Explain ONE criticism of the DSM.
  8. ESSAY Choose ONE of the following psychological disorders. According to scientific research, what causes that psychological disorder?
    Depression
    Schizophrenia
    Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  9. Describe the controversy surrounding dissociative identity disorder and multiple personality.
  10. ESSAY Was Kaczynski (the Unabomber) mentally ill? How do we distinguish between strange or unconventional people and people who are mentally ill?

The following comprehensive question will definitely be on the exam, and will be worth 4-5 points:

  • What is the most useful and/or interesting thing you have learned in this class? Why? (Grading: Shows evidence of thought, statements are accurate)
