Expectations Re the Paper and Paper Presentation

PAPER

1) The paper should first and foremost have an introduction that begins by stating the purpose of the paper. What is the paper trying to demonstrate and why? Second, what is the plan of the paper? How do you intend to demonstrate your argument(s)?

2) Next is the body of the paper. Here your carry out your plan as summarized in the introduction. You probably will want to separate the body of the paper into differenct sections that correspond to the factors that you argue are important to understanding what you are explaining. Section headings often are quite helpful because they logically separate different parts of the paper and help it flow more smoothly.

3) Finally, the conclusion should summarize your findings. The major points of the paper should be reiterated.

PAPER PRESENTATION

1) The presentation is to be no longer than 15 minutes to allow at least 5 minutes for questions/discussion. I will stop you after 15 minutes if necessary. (I will also give you notice when the 15 minutes are nearly up).

2) What is to be covered? The essentials of your paper: the argument, the plan of the paper, the findings of the paper, the conclusion(s).

3) How are you graded on the paper presentation? The bulk of the grade is determined by how well you execute 2). Therefore, the grade is based largely on the content of the paper. To this end, you should be nearly finished with the paper by the time you make your presentation. Beyond this, I will note the manner of presentation. For example, are you comfortable when you speak? Do you stutter? Are you physically as well as orally communicating what you want the audience to know?
