In Search of Bad Writing: Official Rules

Contestants search out examples of incorrect grammar, punctuation, mechanics, spelling, or usage in formally published sources.

  • Errors in grammar and usage are worth 15 points, and must be supported by a description of the error and a reference to the rule violated in one of the three approved manuals.
  • Errors in punctuation and mechanics are worth 10 points, and must be supported by a description of the error and a reference to the rule violated in one of the three approved manuals.
  • Errors in spelling and typography are worth 5 points. Check suspect spelling in a dictionary. Points will be deducted for false claims of incorrect spelling.
  • Point values are doubled for errors found in this course's web pages, general circulation handouts, or assigned readings.
  • No points will be awarded for finding errors in the Cornellian.
  • Points are awarded only to the first contestant identifying any specific error.

All entries must be on official entry forms.

Craig Allin is sole judge of all entries, and you will be notified in writing of the disposition of every entry. This contest is not supervised by Price-Waterhouse or any other reputable organization. People who don't like these rules should get their own contest.
