Career Paths

Sophomore year is an important time in your career development. By now you have completed a year of college and are beginning to explore career possibilities. Whether you are just beginning to research careers or you know what you will be doing, this list will help guide you through the process!

Career exploration

  • Find out what you can do with a liberal arts degree. A liberal arts degree is a major plus for employers; it shows that you are well rounded and have experience in multiple areas. Visit with your academic advisor or with Career Services to learn more.
  • Begin taking career interest surveys. The more you know about what interests you have, the more informed you will be when selecting a career. The Career Services Office offers the Strong Interest Inventory; stop in and see Jayne Swanson or Laura Obrycki Barrett today to take this online assessment.
  • Explore ranges of career opportunities with various majors. Talk to your academic advisor about potential career options related to your anticipated academic major. Career Services also has information on careers and their corresponding majors.

Career skills

  • Begin drafting and updating your résumé in the fall of your sophomore year for job fairs and interviews.
  • Keep an updated list of activities, awards, speakers, and conferences you have attended for future use. This will be helpful when constructing your résumé.
  • “It’s not always what you know, but rather who you know.” Take advantage of programs that teach you how to network with others and practice your networking skills every chance you get.
  • Learn how to effectively interview by scheduling a mock interview with Career Services. Mock interviews give students the chance to learn proper interview etiquette and how to better sell their skills to a prospective employer.
