Preparing Students for Post-college Success in a Changing Economy

Laura Obrycki, Assistant Director of Career Services

RJ Holmes, Director of Career Engagement

The stress of the uncertain economic climate and rising unemployment statistics can overwhelm even the most prepared soon-to-be-college-graduate. The National Association of Colleges and Employers expects the national unemployment rate to reach 8.5% this year, while the projected rate for young bachelor’s degree holders is significantly lower at 4.1%. Although Cornell’s May 2009 graduates will be affected by the current conditions, with careful planning and flexibility, they are still poised to take a positive first-step into post-college life.

Job candidates with internship or related work experience, research projects, campus leadership positions, study abroad and other hands-on experience on their resume will be notably more prepared to enter this competitive market. Under the unique structure of the block plan, Cornell students have more opportunities for experiential learning and benefit from the professional mentoring relationships developed with faculty on a small residential campus.

By continuing to offer extraordinary experiences, Cornell prepares graduates for success, regardless of the economic climate. The Cornell Fellows program provides prestigious high-level internships for students in a variety of disciplines, many of whom are offered full-time positions as a direct result of the fellowship experience. Through innovative programs such as the Berry Center for Economics, Business, and Public Policy, Dimensions: The Center for the Science and Culture of Healthcare, and the Pre-Law Program, students are immersed into their fields of interest, receive preparation for graduate and professional programs, and are connected to industry experts.

The ability to market one’s skills and knowledge in a job search is of equal importance to the experience itself. The Career Services Office continues to provide individual coaching in resume and cover letter development, interview skills, professionalism, and job search strategies. Career Services is remaining updated on the employment outlook for new graduates and incorporating this information into workshops offered this spring. Additionally, collaborations among Career Services, Cornell Fellows, the Berry Center, Dimensions, and the Pre-Law Program continue to evolve and engage students during all four years of their undergraduate experience at Cornell.

For the class of 2009, the road immediately following graduation will bring unforeseen challenges. Encourage your son or daughter to be patient and persistent in the job search and share stories of friends or family members who have graduated in similar economic downturns. The criteria desired by employers have not changed; they are still seeking focused, well-rounded, and motivated candidates. Opportunities exist for those prepared to conduct a diligent search. Encourage your student to utilize the resources and support available in Career Services.
