Residence Hall Room Selection Coming Soon! Chris Wiltgen, Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life Commonly called “room draw”, it is one of the exciting aspects of the spring semester for students. Cornell’s process allows students to select their roommate, residence hall and room for next year. Students must participate in room draw and choose a roommate (or have one assigned) to secure a room for next year. This process will occur during the second and third weeks of Block 8. Lotteries for spaces in our suite-style buildings are held first, followed by a lottery for singles, triples, quads, etc. Then double occupancy rooms (the majority of our spaces) are up for grabs. The lottery system is based on academic year (rising seniors followed by rising juniors, then rising sophomores) and pure luck in a numbers draw (literally drawing a number out of a bag – students prefer this “hand’s on” method rather than having a computer randomly assign lottery numbers). So, seniors have choices of available spaces in the first round, and seniors with the lowest numbers have first dibs; then it is the rising juniors’ turn followed by rising sophomores.
