Message from President Les Garner, Jr.

Leading Cornell During a Challenging Time

The nation and the world are clearly in the midst of an economic crisis more serious that any we have encountered in decades. Cornell must adapt to a new economic reality, and we intend to do so in a way that will preserve the strength of the educational program and enable us to be a stronger institution once the crisis subsides.

Our primary commitment is to the quality of teaching and learning at the College, whether they occur in the classroom, in campus activities or in the many off-campus learning opportunities the College offers. At a time when the resources available to us are reduced because of the decline in the value of our endowment, we are reallocating resources as necessary to protect the integrity of our programs.

Major capital improvements at the College are funded through contributions from alumni, foundations and friends. Several such projects, such as the renovation and addition to the Commons and a proposed expansion and renovation of our science facilities, may be delayed until funding can be secured, but we will continue to pursue that funding energetically.

We appreciate that the economic downturn has had an adverse impact on households as well as institutions. We are investing further in our need-based financial assistance programs, and we suggest that if you have questions about the financial assistance program, you call the Office of Financial Assistance (1-877-579-4049) to discuss your situation.

Cornell has, in its 156-year history, weathered other severe economic crises. My colleagues and I will do our best to lead the College through this crisis in a way that not only preserves, but in fact enhances, the value of a Cornell education.
