Peer Advocate Job Description

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
August 2005 through November 2005

ELIGIBILITY
Should maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be enrolled in courses or present on campus during the first three blocks of Fall 2005.

NSO TEAM MEMBER EXPECTATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
1. Be supportive and educated about Cornell and its services
2. Abide by College policies
3. Give the position highest priority among co-curricular involvements and remain committed throughout the term of the position
4. Be able to influence, motivate, and earn the trust of a diverse group of people
5. Be assertive, creative, responsible, flexible and sociable
6. Be able to learn on the job; be comfortable leading by example and serving as a role model
7. Have a positive attitude and encourage positive attitudes in others

PEER ADVOCATE GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Actively participate in leadership training and campus information sessions
2. Complete various tasks and facilitate events related to New Student Orientation (NSO)
3. Provide a welcoming and supportive environment for all new students
4. Assist new students with learning about Cornell and getting involved on campus
5. Get to know each member of a peer group (10-15 new students), provide them with information about the College, assist them through NSO, and involve them in activities after classes begin
6. Attend NSO team meetings and functions after classes begin

CHRONOLOGICAL OUTLINE OF RESPONSIBILITIES (outline is subject to change)
Wednesday, April 6- first team meeting, 6:00-7:00pm

Sunday, April 17- participate in NSO Spring Training activities from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm.
July - send postcards to peer group members
August/September

  1. Thursday, August 25 - return to campus
  2. Aug. 25-29 participate in staff training activities
  3. Aug. 30 - Sept. 3 assist with NSO events and lead peer group activities
  4. be available the first week of classes for pre-arranged new student activities Blocks 1-3 - coordinate peer group activities (at least 1/week during Block 1/monthly during Blks. 2-3)
September - November
- participate in NSO staff meetings (weekly during Blocks 1-3)

EVALUATION
On-going evaluation and continual feedback will be practiced. A formal evaluation process, including assessments from peer group members and Orientation Leaders, will be conducted in late September or early October.

REMUNERATION
Peer Advocates will be paid approximately $150 during 2nd Block and approximately $100 during 4th Block. Failure to carry out the responsibilities or meet the expectations of the position could result in dismissal and/or reduction of remuneration.
