Cornell jazz ensembles concert April 22

April 16, 2007

MOUNT VERNON — Two Cornell College jazz ensembles will present a concert Sunday, April 22, that emphasizes important aspects of jazz tradition. The performance begins at 3 p.m. in Kimmel Theatre of Youngker Hall on the Cornell campus. Admission is free.

In a call-and-response format, the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will pay musical tributes to the blues; to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz; and to the great jazz performers Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. Selections will include “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” “Satin Doll,” “Do You Know What It Means (To Miss New Orleans),” “All Blues” and “Black Bottom Stomp.”

The ensembles are directed by Don Chamberlain, associate professor of music.
