Events celebrate King’s legacy

Jan. 12, 2007

MOUNT VERNON - In October 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in Cornell's King Chapel. Cornell will celebrate his life and legacy with the following events on Monday, Jan. 15, sponsored by the Black Awareness Cultural Organization, the Office of Intercultural Life, the department of sociology and anthropology and the Project for Civic Engagement.

11:30 a.m., Orange Carpet, The Commons
“Sharing Our Dreams,” with comments from Nakyda Dean, James Thindwa, and Andrea Arzuaga.

“I Have A Dream,” a reading of the speech delivered Aug. 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C. Readers will be Claudia Pineda, Emmett Joseph, Heather Roberts, Jeanna Kadlec, Justin Valenstein, Monique Portwood, and Josh Youngblood.

3:30 p.m., Hedges Conference Room, The Commons
“Waging a Living,” a film that examines the challenges of families and individuals trying to make ends meet on minimum wage. Facilitated by sociology professor Mary Olson.

5:30 p.m., Commons lobby
MLK Candlelight Vigil, led by interim chaplain Stephanie Haskins ’04. All are invited to participate in the annual walk across campus and to reflect on Dr. King’s connection to Cornell, the history of the MLK tree, and the college’s commitment to keeping the dream alive on the Hilltop.

6 p.m., Harlan Dining Room, The Commons
The campus community is invited to bring dinner trays from Scramble to share a meal following the vigil.

6:30 p.m., Harlan Dining Room
“The Struggle for a Living Wage and Workers' Rights under Corporate Globalization.” Guest speaker James Thindwa.
