Auryn Quartet performs March 12 for Cornell’s Music Mondays series

March 5, 2007

MOUNT VERNON — The Auryn Quartet performs March 12 in King Chapel for the final concert in Cornell College’s Music Mondays series.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $10 (adults) and $5 (students).

The quartet’s program features Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 80, Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2.

In 2006, the Auryn Quartet of Cologne celebrated its 25th anniversary with a concert at the Wiener Musikverein. Named for the amulet that grants intuition in Michael Ende’s “Neverending Story,” Auryn is one of the foremost quartets of its generation. Its hallmarks are interpretative mastery, individuality and intensity of expression. The quartet has concertized on the major stages worldwide including Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center.

Auryn’s many recordings have won major prizes, including the Diapason d’Or. Their recording of the complete Beethoven quartets, released in 2004, is considered by Gramophone to be the best performance of these works on the market. Recent releases are the string quartets of Debussy, Faure and Ravel and of Brahms.
