Cornell joins national program providing consumer-friendly data

 MOUNT VERNON – Cornell College has joined hundreds of private colleges and universities nationwide in the University & College Accountability Network (U-CAN), a Web-based project launched today to provide comprehensive public information to help prospective students and their families judge the quality of higher education institutions.
U-CAN is accessible at www.ucan-network.org.
Students and their families now have free online access to objective and measurable data – presented in a common format – that’s supplemented by targeted hyperlinks to schools’ Web sites. The in-depth information covers admissions, enrollment, academics, student demographics, graduation rates, most common fields of study, transfer of credit policy, accreditation, faculty information, class size, tuition and fee trends, price of attendance, financial aid, campus housing, student life and campus safety.
The information provided in the U-CAN institutional profiles is derived from the U.S. Department of Education’s IPEDS survey and the Common Data Set.
The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) coordinates U-CAN. Cornell President Les Garner chairs the NAICU Board of Directors.
“U-CAN is the result of our conversations with families, members of Congress and the Department of Education, who all expressed a growing need to find better college consumer information,” Garner said. “NAICU is at the forefront of a trend in higher education to meet this need, and ultimately to provide greater institutional transparency.”
