Music
Mondays is the successor to Cornell College's May Music Festival, which
celebrated its centennial in May 1998. By offering concerts throughout
the year rather than on one spring weekend, we intend to present a wider
variety of music to a broader audience. Concerts will be held at 8 p.m.
in King Chapel on the Cornell campus. General admission is $8 at the door.
Admission is free to Cornell students, faculty, staff and their families.

The performance schedule is:
Oct. 19: Minneapolis Guitar Quartet
Oct. 26: Marcia Ball
Nov. 23: Ahn Trio
Feb. 15, 1999: Singphoniker
April 12, 1999: Saint Louis Brass Quintet
May 10, 1999: Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra with cellist
Wendy Warner
Minneapolis Guitar Quartet
Oct. 19, 1998
"Music
just about good enough to eat" is how Bill McGlaughlin, host of public
radio's "St. Paul Sunday," describes Minneapolis Guitar Quartet performances.
Founded in 1986, the quartet has performed across the country and live
on public radio. The quartet's pioneering efforts to commission and premiere
works has helped it earn a reputation as one of North America's leading
guitar ensembles.
Marcia Ball
Oct. 26, 1998
Singer,
songwriter and highly energetic piano player Marcia Ball plays roadhouse
rock, rhythm and blues, deep soul and ballads at a single sitting. A native
Texan raised in extreme southwest Louisiana, Ball hit Austin in the late
'70s as the country movement was taking off, then settled back into Gulf
Coast R&B in the early '80s. She's a favorite at Southern blues festivals
and a regular on public TV's "Austin City Limits."
Ahn Trio
Nov. 23, 1998
The
Ahn sisters -- violinist Angella and the twins, pianist Lucia and cellist
Maria -- first gained fame in 1987 when they were featured in a Time magazine
cover story, "Asian-American Whiz Kids." Trained at The Juilliard School,
the sisters are dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary
chamber music. They tour annually throughout North America and perform
frequently in Asia and Europe.
Singphoniker
Feb. 15, 1999
The
male a cappella ensemble formed in 1980 when six students at the Academy
of Music in Munich, Germany, joined forces during a concert tour of the
academy's madrigal choir in Italy. Today the sextet's repertoire includes
early plain chant, modern jazz and popular standards. They have received
numerous recording prizes, including the Grand Prix du Disque, and are
hailed for their full, warm sound.
Saint Louis Brass Quintet
April 12, 1999
Since
its founding in 1964, the group has made regular appearances throughout
the United States and more recent trips abroad, including a 10-concert
tour of Japan. Members have performed with ensembles and orchestras across
the United States, in addition to teaching at Indiana University, Arizona
State University and the Yale School of Music.
Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra with cellist Wendy Warner
May 10, 1999
At
just 26 years of age, Wendy Warner has become one of the leading cellists
in the world. She collaborates with the world's finest orchestras and
recently embarked on a North American tour with the National Symphony
Orchestra under Mstislav Rostropovich, her longtime teacher. Warner will
perform Elgar's Cello Concerto with director Christian Tiemeyer and the
Cedar Rapids Symphony, now in its 76th season.
