A Decade of Famous Faces on The Hilltop

 
 

In the past decade or so, Cornell has attracted a number of famous faces, from the four-year glut of presidential candidates to the occasional national speaker. Names that need no introduction - Steinem, Obama, Scalia, Stephanopoulos, Gould - have spent time on the Hilltop. Here, for the first time, is a gallery of some of the better known visitors Cornell has hosted. 

 

Alan Page 

Football Hall of Famer and Minnesota Supreme Court Associate Justice visited Cornell in February, 1997. 

Bill Bradley 

Bill Bradley brought his presidential campaign to Cornell on Jan. 23, 2000. 

Cornel West 

Cornel West, spoke at Cornell's 2nd Annual Conference on White Privilege, April 2001. 

Gary Wills 

Garry Wills spoke as part of Cornell's sesquicentennial celebrations in 2004. 

Newt Gingrich 

Newt Gingrich helped Cornell College launch Dimensions on May 13, 2005. 

Gloria Steinem 

Feminist and writer Gloria Steinem visited Cornell College on April 15, 1999. 

Al Gore 

Al Gore stopped by to lend his stamp of approval to Julie Thomas in October of 2002. 

Stephen Jay Gould 

Stephen Jay Gould lectured on "The Science of Evolution and the Politics of Creationism," in Nov. 2001. 

Antonin Scalia 

Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the inaugural Earhart Lecture on May 6, 1999. 

Tom Vilsack 

Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack was the guest speaker at Cornell College's opening convocation on Sept. 4, 2003. 

Bob Woodward 

Bob Woodward delivered Cornell College's inaugural Delta Phi Rho Lecture on March 11, 2004. 

Fareed Zakaria 

Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, spoke on “The Future of Freedom” on Nov. 9, 2005. 

Barack Obama 

Sen. Barack Obama called students to national service in a speech at the Small Multi-Sport Center on Dec. 5, 2007. 

Madeline Albright 

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright came to campaign for Sen. Hillary Clinton in Dec. 2007. 

Bill Richardson 

Gov. Bill Richardson spoke on a multitude of issues in front of a packed house in December of 2008 

George Stephanopoulos 

George Stephanopoulos spoke at Cornell College’s King Chapel on May 7, 2008 as part of the Delta Phi Rho lecture series.
