Jonathon Thull
Jonathon Thull (Studio Voice, Vocal Pedagogy and Lyric Theatre) has a doctoral degree in vocal performance and pedagogy as well as an M.M in opera theatre direction from the University of Iowa. He received an M.M. in choral conducting from the University of Minnesota, and has a B. A. in music from the College of St. Thomas. Additional faculty appointments in vocal instruction have occurred at the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, and William Penn College.With more than 30 operatic and musical theatre roles to his credit, Jonathon has performed the title role in productions of Man of La Mancha, Sweeney Todd and The Marriage of Figaro. Performances with Minnesota Opera include the role of Zuniga in their acclaimed production of Carmen. Most recently, he created the role of Pierre Fontaine in Muscatine! The Musical by Peter Press. In addition, he has premiered lead roles in Jonathan Chenette’s Eric Hermannson’s Soul, Libby Larsen’s Christina Romana, the North American premiere of Rachmaninov ’s Aleko and Wendy Kesselman’s musical theatre drama The Black Monk.
While Dr. Thull has taught vocal pedagogy, his primary duties revolve around Studio Voice where he maintains a large and successful vocal studio. His voice students are frequently among the top finishers in the National Associations of Teachers of Singers yearly competition. Jonathon founded the Cornell Lyric Theatre in 1998. He has served in a variety of capacities for CLT ranging from stage and music direction as well as set design. Among his numerous theatrical credits include productions of Godspell ~ 2000 A.D., The Secret Garden, Hair, Sweeney Todd, The Baker’s Wife, Gianni Schicchi, and The Marriage of Figaro. This January, he will lead the music and vocal direction for CLT’s production of Little Shop of Horrors.
Serving as the Chorus Master for Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, Jonathon’s chorus preparation has included productions of La Traviatai, Otello and Carmen. As stage director and set designer for CROT’s Young Artists Program, he has developed productions of Jack and the Beanstalk and the forthcoming The Night Harry Stopped Smoking. For Iowa City Community Theatre as performer, director and/or designer, production work includes Sweeney Todd, Kiss Me, Kate, The Man of La Mancha, The Secret Garden, and Oliver!.
Jonathon resides in Iowa City with his wife, Nancy Hagen, and their two cats. When not involved in music and theatre, he enjoys home renovation and construction projects.
