Media updates

Cornellian: There is a $450 discrepancy in the financial report due to misrecordings. They also got $3,000 back from the Senate, and will be getting the rest in the summer so that the Senate has more time to reclaim the money. There are going to be different contact e-mails for different sections on the newspaper, so it’s easier to keep track of the students’ response/reactions. Cornellian representatives are trying to figure out the ways to get to the conference next weekend (suggestions: ask John or Carolyn).

Royal Purple: Even though they missed the first publication deadline, the process has been better than last year. Quite a few staff members got honoraria deductions for not completing assignments. An editor resigned, and the position is being advertised.

KRNL:  The constitution is being updated to omit the sports broadcasting position. The Broadcasting Committee is still discussing whether to switch from radio station to Internet only. They realize that there are pros and cons to this change. There has also been a student survey on this matter, even though the questions are a little ambiguous. Two questions asked:

How often so you listen to KRNL? 75% said never, 18% said once/week, 5% twice a week.

Would you listen to KRNL if it were streamed online? 53% said yes, 45% no.

Media head advertisement: Block 7 interviews will take a couple days, depending on how many people apply for the position. The deadline to apply for Media Head position is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23rd (beginning of block break, allowing a bit more time for reference checks. Advisors will check references using our standard form. Dee Ann Rexroat will update the Website and submit to Today@Cornell. Others volunteered to post OC sign, four square, and a flyer at the Cornellian circulation stations. Next block, media board will schedule meetings at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursdays, March 3 and 10.

Annual budget timeline: tentative budget needs to be voted on, due on Friday after getting back from spring break. We added a Media Board meeting on initial budgets for Tuesday, April 5.

Eight block discussion: What is the impact on Media in Cornell? Definitely reduce the products produced/year. Reduce the airtime for KRNL. More pressure to finish work? Not for Royal Purple because they will have to finish everything by March for printing anyway. There might be fewer events to mention in the yearbook, but the pages are still the same. Cornellian is considering weekly publication at half the size, with half the staff. Chase asked if students would be more motivated by credit than honoraria. There was much discussion and he will follow up with Academic Affairs to learn what is involved in getting credit for non-class projects. Dee Ann will contact her counterparts at ACM colleges to see if they know whether their student media head receive honoraria/pay or credit.
