Block 1

Sept. 8, 2011

Present: Elizabeth Brown, Justin Brown, Will Dinneen, Laura Farmer, Jill Hopper, Zarni Htet, Thomas Kirk, Michelle Mouton, Nicole Potter, Adam Reed (vice-chair), Dee Ann Rexroat (chair), Carol Stock, Matt Zhorne. Absent: Mike Kragenbrink, Sean McKenna, Zaw Win.

Nomination of Vice-Chair: Adam Reed was elected as vice chair, and took over the meeting.

Introductions: Professor Michelle Mouton was introduced as the 2011-12 Faculty Representative. The Board reviewed who has voting privileges: four student votes (does not include station manager and business managers), three rep votes (business services, faculty, student affairs).

Media updates

Cornellian: Zarni Htet gave a financial update; the web designer and a cartoonist were not fully paid last year and payment was taking from fund-raising. The printer costs were $1,000 over and again paid from fund-raising. Tom Kirk reported that all positions are filled and the early edition was published in time for New Student Orientation.

Royal Purple: Nicole Potter laid out 75% of the book (templates) over the summer. Two editor positions are not yet filled; one will happen after the Student Involvement Fair, and the other will depend on need. Potter will meet with publisher rep. 2011 book supplements have arrived and will be shipped to Class of 2011. Potter announced a CLOCS-Royal Purple collaborative photo contest from Block 2 to Block 9.

KRNL: Adam Reed reported that they sold 300 CDs this week and are planning a big “relaunch” to happen over lunch Sept. 16. The entire playlist (used when there isn’t a live show) is being revamped and updated. They are looking into being broadcast in The Commons.

Annual budget update: The following was the result of Senate budget fest in May.

The Cornellian: The cultural editor position was cut.

Royal Purple: No cuts made (Royal Purple submitted a smaller budget).

KRNL: Cuts were made to increases KRNL requested for most positions. The General Manager received honoraria on par with other medias. No other cuts were made.

We were reminded that the previously separate reserve accounts for equipment are now in one account. We will need to work on how to share them fairly, since KRNL’s needs are different from the Cornellian and Royal Purple, which share computer equipment.

Media Goals: Goals are being set for each media, to help with the annual evaluations taking place in December. The Cornellian is establishing goals for each section, as well as significant website improvement. The Royal Purple will meet all deadlines and utilize all staff; discussed trying to fit in faculty photos. KRNL will capture the first-year and sophomore classes, have a better presence on campus, and broadcast in The Commons (such as in the Ratt or Bookstore). Each media head will finalize their goals and submit them to Media Board by Block 2 meeting.

Constitution Committee: Sean McKenna was recommended as chair; Will Dinneen will talk to him about this. Also serving will be Rexroat, Mouton, Kirk, and Reed. The committee will meet and then bring suggestions to Media Board. Everyone should familiarize themselves with the constitution, and Dee Ann will email the link as a reminder.

ACP Conference: Plans are already being made for the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) conference 2nd block break. There was discussion on transportation costs. Kirk is following up.

Senate update: Dinneen said Senate’s goal is to be prepared for the unexpected, including emergency appropriations, and calling for more accountability. Media Board is looking forward to further cooperation with Senate.
