Cornell College Media Evaluation Process

The Student Senate Appropriations Committee in 2004 assigned Media Board to evaluate all student media staff who receive honoraria. Evaluations are due by the end of Block 4. These are the steps of the process:

  • Media advisors evaluate each media head.
  • A survey of the student body is also recommended (NEW in 2008).
  • Business Office representative evaluates the business manager(s) and KRNL station manager.
  • Student media heads are evaluated by their staff members.
  • Student media heads evaluate their paid staff.

Step 1. Self-evaluations AND peer evaluations complete by 3rd week of Block 3
Media heads complete self-evaluations by the 3rd week of 3rd block and submit to their media advisor or the Business Office representative.

Evaluation forms are available here:

Editors/KRNL General Manager
Business Managers/KRNL Station Manager

All paid media staff complete self-evaluations by the 3rd week of 3rd block and submit to media heads (Cornellian editor(s)-in-chief, Royal Purple editor, KRNL general manager).

Peer evaluations of Media Heads are also due by 3rd week of Block 3 to advisor or Business Office rep (in the case of business managers/station manager).

Step 2. Media heads evaluate paid staff by 1st week of Block 4
Media heads evaluate their paid staff (incorporating each staff member's self-evaluation) and meet individually with each staff member and set goals if necessary.

Media heads submit their recommendations to Media Board during the 1st week of Block 4. Media heads keep staff self-evaluations and other notes or detailed evaluations on file for reference.

Step 3. Advisor/Business Office rep evaluate media heads by week 2 of Block 4
Media advisors review online job descriptions, then meet with each student media head (incorporating each media head's self-evaluation and staff evaluations), resulting in an evaluation for Media Board. The advisors/Business Office rep determine areas of strength and areas where improvement is needed. Business Office rep should also consult with the editors/KRNL general manager regarding the business managers/KRNL station manager. If necessary, a list of goals is prepared. The evaluation is discussed with media heads.

Advisors keep the self-evaluations and other notes or detailed evaluations on file for reference.

Step 4. Media Board recommendation to Senate by end of Block 4
Media Board meets to review and discuss the summary evaluations from each media at least one week before the end of Block 4. Media Heads receive their evaluation in writing and are given a chance to respond. Media Board chair submits a final recommendation to the Senate Appropriation Committee by the end of Block 4.
