3 Cornell students recognized in MAA Math Horizons
Cornell students Sam Cieszynski, Nate Dwyer, and Collin Smith were recognized in the November 2016 edition of the MAA Math Horizons publication. The group submit a correct solution to a question posed about a certain type of sequence. They were 1 of only 11 such submissions. Congrats guys! Alum returns to speak on matroids
Evan Eakins '07 came back to Cornell October 19 and gave a talk titled 'When Greed is Optimal.' The talk introduced the topic of matroids and highlighted some connections between matroids, graph theory, and greedy algorithms. He later stuck around and chatted with students interested in attending graduate school in mathematics. AMS Fellow Louis Kauffman speaks at Cornell
AMS Fellow Dr. Louis Kauffman came to Cornell to visit the Algebear September 8-9. While visiting Dr. Kauffman also gave a talk on Knot Theory to a packed room full of Cornell students and faculty introducing the concepts of linking numbers and knot coloring. Later in his visit Dr. Kauffman sat in on Dr. Freeman's FYS course "Counting to Infinity in 18 Days." For more information on a capstone in Knot Theory contact Dr. Freeman
Three math students perform summer research in Cellular Automata
Sam Cieszynski, Nate Dwyer, and Collin Smith performed research projects this summer as part of the Cornell Summer Research Institute mentored by Mathematics faculty Steve Bean, Jim Freeman, and Tyler Skorczewski. The theme of the summer research was Cellular Automata (CA). Sam developed a CA model of forest fires, Collin used CA to compose music algorithmically, and Nate developed a CA that can be used to study computability. Learn more
2015-16 Edition of the Tangent Plane is out!
The 2015-16 edition of Then Tangent Plane has been compiled. Topics range from the historical feud of the Bernoulli mathematical family, to modeling tumors, to statistical analyses of archery tournaments. You can read about these projects in the Moose Lounge. Dr. S gives talk at middle school career fair
Dr. S gave a talk at Excelsior Middle School in Marion, IA, May 11, 2016. The students heard about various things math professors can study like suction feeding fish, blood clotting and toilet paper softness. Extra props to Dr. S for wearing academic attire!
Laura Wetzel named 2015-2016 Problem of the Block Champion
Senior Mathematics and Physics major Laura Wetzel has been named the 2015-2016 Problem of the Block Champion. The contest was very close this year with the margin of victory coming down to bonus points earned from winning individual block problems. Congrats Laura! Cornell students only team in Iowa to solve cryptography problem!
The team of Nate Dwyer, Dillon Pape, and Eric Andow were the only team from Iowa to crack a code in the 2016 Kryptos competition. Kryptos is a 4 day international cryptanalysis competition hosted by Central Washington University. This year the competition featured teams from all over the US, Europe, and Indonesia. Cornell College again tops among all liberal arts colleges at Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition
Cornell College teams placed 2nd and 3rd overall at the 2016 Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition and tops among all liberal arts colleges. The team of Collin Smith, Nate Dwyer and Ngoc Nguyen missed claiming the championship by a single point! The competition is sponsored by the Iowa section of the MAA. Cornell Students and Faculty introduce area kids to STEM
Cornell students and faculty from Math, CS and Physics hosted a booth at the 2016 Cedar Rapids STEM Festival held at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. Cornell students Lainey Drevlow, Orgho Neogi, Julia Thome and Ngoc Nguyen along with Math faculty Tyler Skorczewski and Jim Freeman, Physics faculty Kara Beauchamp, CS faculty Ross Sowell and science librarian Amy Gullen introduced students to STEM topics such as electricity, magnetism, drones, origami and mathematical puzzles. Students earn credit for participating in outreach programs like this one as part of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics culture points program. Josh Lee studies suction feeding at CSRI
Josh Lee worked with Dr. S during the 2015 Cornell Summer Research Institute (CSRI) studying the mathematics of suction feeding fish. In particular, Josh used an immersed boundary approach to investigate the fluid flows suction feeding fish create to lift limpet prey off the bottom of the sea floor. Josh is planning on pursuing advanced engineering work at the University of Arizona.

Dr. S gave three talks around the country this summer. His first talk in May at the University of Iowa Mathematical Biology seminar concerned mathematical modeling and computational approaches to study suction feeding fish. A few weeks later he presented in Salt Lake City, Utah at the NSF Computational Biofluids in Physiology conference. His poster was about models of platelet aggregation. Finally in August he presented at the MAA Mathfest centennial celebration on measuring competitive balance across sports leagues. Brian Diaz presents at Iowa MAA section meeting
Brian Diaz ('18) presented at the Iowa section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). In his talk titled "An Elementary Solution to a Problem of Ramanujan's Interest," Brian spoke about his original research that not only confirmed Ramanujan's previous results without resorting to advanced mathematics, but also extended the problem to show results for a new parameterization.
Linear Algebra class presents posters on Orange Carpet
Dr. Skorczewski's Linear Algebra class presented posters on Cornell's famed Orange Carpet at the end of block 1. Projects involved applications of linear algebra and included such topic as TV rankings, traffic flow, image compression, iterated prisoner's dilemma, Lorentz transformations, and blackjack.
Skorczewski named 2014-15 Robert F. Witte Project NExT Fellow of the MAA
Assistant Professor Tyler Skorczewski is the 2014-15 Robert F. Witte Project NExT Fellow of the MAA. This fellowship is aimed at providing a new applied mathematics faculty member a set of resources to enhance their teaching, research and service to the mathematics community.
