Four Easy Steps to Putting the Page Subtitle in the Header

Step 1

First, open the template image in Fireworks. It's located at \\srv4\public\header_templates\subtitle_template.png. Or if you're lazy like me, you can just drag the PNG below into Fireworks:

Step 2

Now double-click on the Text to open the Text Editor dialog. For this demonstration, we'll be making a subtitle for the Astrophysics department, so in the Text Editor type "Astrophysics". Do not change the font size, color, etc. Now click "OK". Your image should now look like this:

Edited Text

Step 3

Since our text is now shorter, we must make adjust the horizontal lines to meet the edges of the text. First, click on the horizontal line at the left of the canvas. Using the right arrow key, move the line until exactly one pixel is between it and the leftmost edge of the text. I recommend zooming in to get it close. Note that holding down shift while using the arrow keys causes the selected object to move in ten-pixel increments. Zoomed in, it will look like this:

Left Line Zoomed In

Now repeat the above for the right-hand line:

Right Line Zoomed In

Step 4

Your subtitle image is now complete, but before you use it you must export it. On the Optimize palette, choose "PNG 8" and set Colors to 16 (this is a very low-color image) and export the file using File > Export.

Our final image is less than 1 kB and looks like this:
