Fully Functional Example Student Organization

Basically this is what your organization's page will look like. Of course, the title, nav and content will all be your own.

Now here's what your editable regions will look like in Dreamweaver

  • Subtitle Image and Right Photo are yours to change, the template uses the two images you see above. There is a tutorial for constructing those in Fireworks: here.
  • The next editable region is your Organization's name. This space is very flexible and can be an image. The font, color and size, if you do use text, can be changed with your properties bar. (see web policies: text apperance)
  • Contact Information should be "mailto" links to different officers who can answer questions. You don't need to list the Webmaster, because their email will be down at the Maintained By region.
  • The Body is the most flexible region of the template. It is now completely impossible to break the headers and footers.
  • You no longer have to worry about getting in trouble for not having the Student Organizational Webpage Disclaimer linked on your webpage. It is embedded in the template, along with a link to the Cornell College homepage.
  • The navigation and the "Last Updated" information are run by PHP. Because of this, all page extensions should be .shtml.

The student organization template can be saved into your own site by saving it from here.
Or it could already be in your organization's directory

A Step-by-Step tutorial on your organization's page's navigation can be found at
http://www.cornellcollege.edu/web_policies/navigation.shtml.

How to Start a New Page with the "stu_org" template:

  1. Once you have Dreamweaver opened and your own site defined (see multimedia studio's handouts), go to "File" - "New from Template." A box will pop-up in the middle of your screen with a list of the templates in your department's folder. The only one you're concerned with is one called "stu_org.dwt."
  2. This will open a blank page that looks similar to the one above. The text within the light blue boxes are the editable regions: "OrgName," "Body," "Maintained by," and "related topics ("contact info", it is named related topics because of how our style sheets work, so don't worry about it)
  3. The Body is the most flexible space on the template (the width is approximately 540 pixels). The header can not be broken if text, images or tables exceed that amount.
    • We recommed that you do not exceed the width of the header (700 pixels) if this page is intended to be printer-friendly.
  4. There is a navigation tutorial at http://www.cornellcollege.edu/web_policies/navigation.shtml.
  5. You also don't have to worry about linking back Cornell's homepage. The title at the top links, as well as the "Cornell College" in the footer.
