Ediacaran Fauna (Royal Terrell Museum)

Ediacaran animals represent the first multicellular animal life on the planet.  First discovered by J. C. Sprigg in the Ediacara Hills of New South Wales, Australia, these molds have subsequently been collected from many places around the world.  Paleontologists debate whether these unusual animals represent ancient ancestors of animals extant today, or are members of a separate, largely failed evolutionary experiment.
