Ooids in thin-section. These non-skeletal grains typically form in shallow, highly-agitated tropical environments. They are common components of Paleozoic and Mesozoic carbonate rocks. Today modern ooids are forming in various locations on the Bahamas Banks, the Great Salt Lake and the Persian Gulf.
