Mass mortality of Diadema antillarum.

The pan-Caribbean mass mortality of populations of the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum nearly 20 years ago continues to have a profound impact on the reef ecosystem since a primary biologic control on overgrowth of corals by algae has been removed. My sedimentologic analyses of reef sediments from several different areas (Greenstein, 1989 and others) demonstrated the inadequacy of the reef sedimentary record to preserve an important disturbance event.
