Why Study French at Cornell?
An official language of the United Nations, UNESCO and NATO, French is the second most widely taught language in the world. Americans need not travel to another continent to use their French, for French is an official language of Canada, and Francophone culture is alive and well in many regions of the United States.
French leads students on a path of intellectual discovery. French and Francophone scholars and activists have been at the forefront of interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the world. French is not only a language of the arts, but also one of technological innovation and political diplomacy.
There are many job opportunities in international organizations for French speakers, and students of French are well-prepared for graduate studies. Students in both the humanities and the sciences will have expanded opportunities for research in their disciplines when they achieve proficiency in French.
