How much money should students plan on spending? Travis' Canadian Cash discoveries

How much money should students plan on spending?

For food and basics, I would say about $250 - $300 minimum. The first week I ate out all the time. Then finally bought groceries (which I highly recommend). Nicole Petty, 2002 If you can, bring a lot. This is not only a school program but also a trip. It stinks having $10 in your pocket for weekend nightlife. Don't plan what you can do by money, have enough to not worry. Bring an extra hundred, it helps a lot! Amy Coghill, 2001

I think I got by spending around $300. To be on the safe side, bring $400. I brought $300 in traveler's checks and a credit card, it worked really well. Kate Maier, 2000

$500 min. for basics. I recommend investing in an ATM and VISA card before hand. Carrie Fox, 2000
Bring at least $500 if you want to be able to enjoy yourself. Nick Berger, 2001 $400 Cristy Hamilton, 2001
$300 to $350 for food and same for entertainment! Jeannette Lavery, 1999 $200, minimum. This will increase in Canadian money, but you should bring a little extra for souvenirs and food. Shayla Bailey, 2001
I would bring at least $350. Jennifer Hanson, 2001 I would recommend at least $400 spending money or about $300 and a credit card. Todd Wilson, 2001
Money is necessary. I had a VISA card, which helps a lot for food. Good rates and allowed me not to have to carry a lot of money around. I spent around $400 on food and activities, plus a few souvenirs in there . . . stamps are expensive! Beth Cox, 2002
$450 is a comfortable minimum. Go grocery shopping - it saves money! Justina Cox, 2000 I think I spent about $700. That includes buying some clothes for myself, souvenirs for my family and friends, sending postcards, buying food and other little things. Kristine Szafranski, 2001

Travis' Canadian Cash discoveries

Travis Smith writes: I talked to 3 different banks about getting Canadian currency (Wells Fargo, Firstar, and Mt. Vernon). Wells Fargo will take a week and cost $10.50. Firstar has Canadian currency on hand and it will cost you $7.00 if you have an account there and $10.00 if you don't. Mt. Vernon Bank will take 2 days and will cost you $7.50. Both Wells Fargo and MV Bank suggested that I get cash exchanged when I get there. They encourage me to wait until I get there (they believe it would save me some money since I only want $30 CAD at this time).
