Internships

We strongly encourage all students to consider an internship as part of your degree program.  Internships are possible in the fields of editing/publishing, writing, research, archives/museums, and more.

Course credit is available through ENG 380 and ENG 399.  To get started, please refer to our internship guidelines and our list of possible internship opportunities.  Additional options, resources, and guidance are available from the career services office and professor Shannon Reed.

Jessica Jones '07 *
Independent Publishing Group, Chicago, Ill.

Jessica Jones completed a 2007 internship at IPG during two blocks without missing a beat in her curriculum. "I met some amazing people who really took me under their wing and taught me everything there was to know about the publishing industry and distribution," she says. Read more

Independent Publishing Group, Chicago, Ill.

These students all spent two blocks at IPG, a distributor for small publishers, where they gained insights into production, sales, and distribution processes from start to finish. They also read manuscripts being considered for publication by the Chicago Review Press, drafted press releases for new books from IPG’s network of publishers, and wrote copy for IPG’s catalog. The Cornell Fellows Program provided support for all these students.


Davidson Wissing
Travel and Treats, London, England

Davidson worked in the marketing and advertising department of this British travel company. His internship was inspired, in part, by his experience in England during Theatre, Arts, and Architecture in England (ENG 240).


Matt Heindel ‘07 *
Fantagraphics Books, Seattle, Wash.

Fantagraphics Books publishes underground comic books such as Love and Rockets, book collections of classic comic strips, and a trade magazine of comic news and criticism, The Comics Journal. Matt worked in editorial (Comics Journal only), production, and marketing/promotions.  He wrote reviews, helped with layout, and other tasks.


Brittany Szczepanik *
Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, College of Public Health, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 

Brittany wrote several articles that were published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Iowa Farmers Today, and elsewhere. She also developed presentations on farm safety, and edited a grant proposal. Her internship was supported by a grant from the Dimensions Program.


Charissa Kaspar *
Communications Bureau, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Des Moines, Iowa

Charissa spent most of her time writing and editing press releases and fact sheets, both for Iowa legislators and the general public. She also produces posters and presentations. This internship was supported by the Cornell Fellows Program.


Sid Lister ‘07
Plains Justice, Mount Vernon, Iowa

Plains Justice is a new environmental law firm pursuing environmental justice in the Northern Plains region of the U.S.  Sid researched grants.


Tim Clifford ‘06 *
ColumbiaUniversity Press, New York

As an editorial intern, Tim was involved in the process of getting manuscripts reviewed and preparing them for release.  His tasks included coordinating peer reviews of manuscripts and book proposals; contacting scholars qualified to review the material; and writing memos that accompany final manuscripts released into production. 


Stacy Weinberg ‘06
W. W. Norton & Company, New York

As an editorial intern, Stacy did everything from basic office tasks like filing and copying to reading manuscripts and proposals, writing reader's reports, obtaining permissions for forthcoming books, working on catalog and jacket copy, attending editorial meetings, and generally helping out the seven editorial assistants as they moved projects along from the manuscript stage all the way to the bookstore.

Iowa City Area Development Group, Iowa City, Iowa

Zach worked on updating the Corridor Multi-cultural Resource Guide.
