Campus Gas and Steam Study
In conjunction with Shive-Hattery engineers, Cornell has commissioned a steam and natural gas survey of campus facilities. Shive-Hattery has completed this study and offered recommendations to the college regarding the heating systems infrastructure and gas delivery piping on campus.
Initiatives they recommend include installation of stand-alone hot water boilers in most buildings across campus, replacement of steam lines feeding the buildings closest to the campus heating plant and the installation of a “gas loop” to enable the entire campus to be fed from the campus systems gas feed at the campus heating plant.
These initiatives will require a capital investment of approximately $3,000,000 but will result in annual savings of more than $250,000 per year. It is anticipated that capital investments will be planned gradually as buildings are renovated and built with the predicted savings being realized system upgrades are installed.
